Durable. Clear Strips. Sustainably Made.
Our Select Maple Butcher Block is carefully graded and custom cut to
yield clear full length strips for customers objecting to Finger-jointed
products. Also crafted from Pacific Coast Maple sustainably grown on
the West Coast, this edge-grain butcher block is suitable for kitchen
countertops, islands, and tabletops.
How It’s Made
High Quality Maple lumber is ripped and graded so as to remove undesireable defects
naturally occuring in the wood. Strips are cut to yield the maximum usable lengths, saving
any remaining valuable shorter pieces to be incorporated into our Standard Maple Finger-
jointed product. These strips can also range from ¾” to 2” wide and are glued face to face
with water-resistant polyvinyl glue, forming a smooth and sturdy surface.

Finger-jointed vs. Non-Finger-jointed.
It’s a common misconception that our Select Non-Finger-jointed Products are superior to
our Finger-jointed products. In truth, both configurations are high quality and excel in their
own ways.
A Finger-jointed Butcher Block goes through a manufacturing process that improves the
strength and stability of the wood strips. Millworkers are able to look for straight grain,
separate color variation, and create custom finished lengths. With these factors in place, the
use of these smaller blocks creates the blended mix of grain and subtle color variation
that butcher block is well known for.
A Non-Finger-jointed Butcher Block uses a similar sorting process, but takes place much
earlier in the operation. Longer length strips (free of defects) are much more rare and can
be difficult to source. Still, the use of full length uninterupted strips naturally create a
beautiful product with consistent color and grain, but must be limited lengthwise in
order to maintain stability over the natural unpredictable tendency of continuous wood.
